Starting a blog is difficult for newbies because of too many options available on the internet as a blogging platform. In my case when I was newbies I searched a lot to find the best platform to start a free blog.  I found WordPress as one of the option to start a blog. WordPress is available in two versions as a Free and Premium version. I recommend you to start a blog as free if you don’t have experience in writing articles even though you have money to buy the premium version. Just try the free version and get to know how to publish article and quality of your content and your consistency toward blogging. If you consistently blog for one month you are fit to this. Free WordPress: How to start a Free WordPress blog[Step by step guide]:

1.How to set up WordPress account:

WordPress is well known as the best platform to start a blog in the online word because of its made easy process to start and maintain a blog.

Everything in WordPress is organized in form of steps and following the instructions to set up WordPress account.

II.Select of Blog option:

Clicking on above takes you to this tab with the following option as shown below.Select blog option from options Blog, Website, Portfolio and online stores

Selecting the blog option will take you to the following window with a free WordPress theme options.

III.Selecting Free WordPress theme:

No need to over think, select one of the themes in this window to go to next step. If you want you can change the theme later.After selecting the theme it will redirect to the window in which you will get the option to choose the domain.

 IV. Selection of Domain name:

While selecting the domain the first thing to remember is to select keyword as a domain name which describes your blog.

This is temporary domain name you can change the domain name while upgrading your blog to the WordPress premium version.

Having keyword as domain name helps you while doing SEO.

After selecting the domain name, the present window will take to next option in which you need to pick WordPress plan.

V.Selection of Blog plan:

Here you have four options such as free, personal, premium and business.Now you are starting a free version so please select WordPress free plan by clicking on start with a free plan . In this window you can check the difference between free WordPress plan with remaining plan features.

After selecting the blog plan, the present window will take you to next step where you need to create WordPress account

 VI.Account Creation Form:

In this step, you need to enter Your Email address, Username, and password.

While choosing the password, please select the password with special characters, numbers, lower and upper case is secure.

Note: Please unlock eye icon on password field to see the password.





After clicking on create my account, it will take you to WordPress account with selected theme preview on right side and WordPress admin bar on the left side with a welcome message on top.

By using theme customization option you can change the website design according to your need.

2.How to customize WordPress theme:


a) Click on customize option which is available on WordPress admin bar to customize the theme.

b) In the customization bar, you have following options to customize the theme. Follow the below instructions to customize options.


i.This option contains three fields in which you have options to add Site title, site icon,Tagline, logo and checkbox to display title and tagline.


ii.Press publish after customizing site-identity-options.

2.Colors and Backgrounds:

In this option, you have sub-options to change colors and background of the theme.You can change the colors and background by using the palette or manual picking of your favorite colors.


By using the font customizing option, you change the font used in the theme.In this section, you have two option to change fonts of the Heading and base font.


By using this option, you can add the image between menubar and body.

5.Menu :

This section is used to add menu and menu list to the theme.

6.Content options:

This section helps you to customize the blog post display with options like below

  •  Whether to display post as full post or summary and by default option.
  • Checkbox with author bio which helps to display to author biography with a single post.
  • Posts details checkbox which enables and disables the display of post details of date, tag, category, and author.
  • Featured images options to display images on blog achieves, single post and pages of the blog.


This section helps you to add widgets to the theme.Widgets are the special application which helps to add specific functionality to the website.

Ex: If you want to add Facebook like box. You can add this to a page without writing any code with the help of widgets.

8.Static front page:

This option helps you to display static front page or special design page as the front page of the website.

At the bottom of the admin bar, you have icon option to see the preview how the website appears on different devices.

3.How to add pages in free WordPress blog:

Adding a page in free WordPress is same as other WordPress versions.Follow the instruction below to add pages to WordPress blog.

i.Click on the Add option which is side to page option in WordPress admin bar.


After clicking on add option, it will take you to new page publishing tab with options related to page settings, page title etc. The following Gif shows the options and settings.

ii.Options and setting to publish WordPress page:



In place of the title,  write the page name what you want to name it.

ex: tutor tutorial or Funny SMS etc

2.Page URL:

Page URL is an address of the web page. You can change the Page URL or rewrite the page URL relevant to page content.

It is better to write the page URL as SEO friendly URL as per On page SEO techniques.

3.Content to display:

Write the content in this section which you want to display on the page.

It is good to have the keyword in page URL to rank in Search engine results.

Write the content in a well-organized form using headings, underline, hyperlinks and order and unorder list and media related content.


In this section, you have options related to publication date,  status of the page whether it is published or not.

5.Featured image:

Here in this section, you can upload the image which you want to display as featured or thumbnail image instead of displaying or not displaying image as thumbnail in page summary.

6.Page attributes:

Under Page Attributes, you have the option to select the parent page of the page if exists.


In this section, you have the option to define whether to show sharing and like button on the page.

If you check the options, share and like button will visible on your page.


Under more section, you have options such as slugline .excerpts .discuss and copy page:


The slug is the URL-friendly version of the page title.

It helps you in SEO [ Search Engine Optimization] to explain briefly about your post.


Excerpts are simply defined as a brief summary of the page.

Includes excerpts with keywords which are relevant to the page content.


In this section, you have the option to allow comment and comment with external links related to blog-commenting.

iv.Copy page:

By using Copy page, you can copy the title and content of the page.

a) Click on the Add option which is beside the blog posts to go to the post page.

b) The post page is similar to the page but with little difference in the post setting.

c) In post settings, you have one extra option which is category and tag option.

d) By using Category option, you can group the posts according to the topic and with tag option, you can add the more specific keyword to the post.

Note:* In post and page writing page, you have the option to write the content using Visual or HTML editor.

By using publish option at top right of the page, you can schedule the posts according to your wish.

4.How to configure the Free WordPress settings:

In this  Configuration setting, you have option as showing below


1.Sharing :

In sharing section, you have the option to connect to different social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler etc.

Connect to social sharing site helps you to share your post very easily.


Through this section, you can add a user to the blog to write, edit and update the post by login using different account details.


Plugins are ready-made plug-in software or module that can add to the WordPress blog to add special functionality to blog such as Facebook like button, Forms etc without changing or disturbing main code.

In free WordPress version, you have only option to add free basic plugins to the WordPress blog.


Under this setting section, you have options to add Google Analytics, Site title, Tagline and security, traffic setting.

In traffic settings, you need to add various search engine verification to track visitors and turn on site map generation option to submit the site to search console and option to enable or disable to show related posts under every post.
